Back after a blogging hiatus. Will be a mixed fandom blog. Expect lots of Chenford, Jonsa, Love Square among other things.

There are several ONG-funded ships currently operating in the central Mediterranean Sea with the specific intent of saving migrants from what has been for years one of the deadliest migration routes in the world. Here is partial list:

Geo Barents (Médecins Sans Frontières)

Ocean Viking (SOS Méditerranée)

Aurora, Sea Watch 3 and Sea Watch 5 (Sea Watch)

Life Support (Emergency)

Open Arms and other ships (Open Arms)

Another important resource for migrants in distress at sea is the hotline AlarmPhone.

Since 2016 these rescue missions have become more and more onerous to fund as EU countries have progressively strengthened the Frontex program while at the same time criminalizing ONG-led search and rescue operations. (Italy has been at the forefront of this trend, and a shipwreck on the coast of Calabria in late February this year only managed to strengthen the resolve of the current government to make it even more complex for ONGs to try and rescue migrants.) So while it definitely won’t solve the root issue, donating to these NGOs still has a tangible effect.

💥🙌👏

Well shit, Henry Jenkins, out here in 1997 dropping truth bombs

Oh hey I need this for a research paper I’m writing, thank you!

i mean he had been out here since 1988 dropping such bombs:

“‘fandom’ is a vehicle of marginalized subcultural groups (women, the young, gays, etc.) to pry open space for their cultural concerns within dominant representations; it is a way of appropriating media texts and rereading them in a way that serves different interests, a way of transforming mass culture into a popular culture”

Jenkins, Henry. “Star Trek Rerun, Reread, Rewritten: Fan Writing as Textual Poaching.” Critical Studies in Mass Communication 5, no. 2 (1988): 85–107. https://doi.org/10.1080/15295038809366691.

there are even some earlier works in fan studies but that’s what i have ready to hand.

Henry’s been amazing for a long time.

Thought I’d share something from neuroscientist Stephanie Ortigue, who researches love and the brain. Her definition is very inclusive to aros and aces: “My research has convinced me that a healthy love life… could include your beloved partner, your closest circle of friends, your family and even your favorite sports team…. Love doesn’t have to be with a living person. If you are really in love with life, with your passion, with your hobby, it can also be a buffer against loneliness.”

tumblr tuesday: sometimes, love is square-shaped

With the fifth season well underway, no one is bored, and feelings are being felt. The uninitiated would be forgiven for thinking there are four people in a love square. They would also be wrong. The rest of you are learning some French, and love Marinette and Adrien dearly—in whatever combination they come. Here is some art for you to enjoy until the next nail-biting episode of Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir.

[image description: a tweet by user @indigenousAI saying

“fun fact: as a DV survivor i cannot register to vote because doing so makes my address public. anyone who is fleeing or hiding from an abuser is automatically disenfranchised from the political process and this is a feature, not a bug”]

I don’t know of the original poster might not be aware

but!

if you’ve been a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking, you can enroll into the address confidentiality program (free of cost!) and be registered to vote as an absentee voter and your name and address will not be made available for the public

it is super easy to get enrolled - the application takes like 5 minutes, but it has to be with someone who is certified to do it (most likely an advocate! try going to a family justice center in your area or calling the Attorney Generals office in your area!!!!)

ALSO :

you don’t need to have any police reports or have a protection order to qualify!!! you just have to sign stating that you’ve been a victim of one of the aforementioned crimes.

Links to the info for every state in the Wikipedia article:

hey if you’re a UK resident can you sign this petition and if not please rb to spread the word

this is an official UK government petition that they have to respond to if it reaches 10,000 signatures

So, this one is actually a lot more important than reporting and blocking spam bots. That post has 20,000 notes rn, so it would mean a lot to me if you could give the same treatment to this as you gave to that (@neil-gaiman if you’re listening).

If the petition gets 100,000 signatures they have to consider it for debate in parliament.

It’s a crime that Gender Recognition Reform was blocked in England, but Scottish MPs voted it into law and that the UK Parliament overturned that is in direct contravention of democracy as a whole.

It’s a pretty serious big deal. Please sign, or, if you’re not a UK citizen, please boost.

fuck google docs so fucking much

i’ve just lost hundreds of docs and pdfs and i’m beyond pissed right now

they’re all permanently gone

actually they’re not holy shit

okay so, gonna tell ya’ll something awesome rn

google drive is a mess sometimes with its storage things and if you’re unlucky it might delete some of your files and you won’t realise until it’s well past the point where they won’t be in ‘trash’ anymore and you’re fucked

all is not lost however!

if you’re on drive via browser, hit the little ? in a circle next to the settings cog and select “help”

search for “file recovery”

it’ll show you the ways to try and recover your files on pc, android, and mac etc

these don’t matter

you need to scroll down to the bottom and just hit the “contact us”

you’ll be logged out automatically

log back in

click the little box to give google permission to attempt to restore your files for that account

click “submit”

give them some time to work but it’s an automatic process

i’ve got most of my files back in less than 10 minutes

all is not lost! rejoice!

I’m gonna reblog this again bc wow but was it helpful to learn!

If the Internet Archive wins this lawsuit, it could be an absolute game-changer for libraries.

Applying the first sale doctrine to digital content could enable libraries to simply buy e-books and lend them on a 1:1 basis rather than having to constantly renew their expensive contracts with vendors. Most public libraries use a huge chunk of their increasingly-limited funds on these licensing agreements, and if some of those funds are freed up they can go towards local communities. This isn’t just about keeping the Wayback Machine. This is about open access to information. This is about ending the artificial scarcity that tech monopolies have created.

Please make an account on Internet Archive, and consider donating.

Please use your local library and check out the FREE events and services they offer.

Please put pressure on the publishing houses involved in this lawsuit.

This is potentially life saving information everyone should know.

No you guys this post helped me find my cat. He was missing for almost a month and I’ve had him for over 12 years. After seeing this I put his favorite blanket he always slept on outside hoping he would smell mine or his scent and he was back the next fucking day asleep on it.

When my cat got out, we called and called for him, and then, later that night, I remembered similar advice to this, and so put his little scratching pad, which he adores, on the front porch. Not even half an hour later, I heard a thump, opened the door, and there was his big butt, meowing at me.

Important and vital

I don’t care that I reblogged this today I’m reblogging it again

awwwww babies ;_; i hope everyone’s pets come home safe.

Tumblr Post+ and how to prevent it

Plenty of people here, myself included, don’t want Post+. It’s a paid subscription and will cause a lot (more) problems on this site.

What does it do?

- Allows blogs to create paid subscriptions that followers have to pay to see blog content. This can cause a lot of problems, as plenty of people come to Tumblr since it has never been a monetizable website.

- You can’t block people who “support” your blog, meaning people can bypass the blocking system to harass blogs, just at a price.

- Creators have other outlets for these services, like Patreon.

- Again, nobody wants to pay for Tumblr posts.

Now, how can you help stop this?

By filling out Tumblr’s Post+ survey! This allows you to give feedback about the Post+ system and what you would/wouldn’t do. You can use this to directly inform Tumblr that you DO NOT want the “Post+” feature. If anyone has anything to add to this (info, updates, etc) I encourage you to! Keep resources current!
